Shakespeare’s quatercentenary, April 2016

On the 20th April, 2016, we shall be marking the four hundredth anniversary of Shakespeare's death, and the Centenary of our Society (founded 1916). There will be a lunch at BRLSI, and a talk by Dr Tom McFaul, Tutor and Lecturer in English, St Edmund Hall, Oxford. Dr McFaul will speak on the subject of 'Fathers in Shakespeare'. Further details, including booking arrangements, will appear in this space nearer the time.

The Dell

The Dell is a little known and much neglected part of Victoria Park, Bath - that is, until now (September 2015). Bath and North East Somerset Council (BaNES) is currently engaged in restoring the 'Aerial Walkway' in the Dell. Unfortunately, this resotoration work does not include the refurbishment of the Shakespeare Memorial. This seems to us to be a missed opportunity. The Shakespeare Memorial was unveiled with much civic ceremony by the Mayor of Bath, Cllr Jerom Murch, on Thursday 28th April, 1864, to commemorate the three hundredth anniversary of Shakespeare's birth. Since then, the monument has been sadly neglected. The inscription is barely legible and the stonework has deteriorated. The Society is currently in negotiation with BaNES and the Bath Preservation Trust with a view to restoring the lettering on the Shakespeare Memorial. Watch this space.
