About us

The Society, founded in 1916, is for lovers of Shakespeare, who wish to express their enjoyment by participating in or listening to the readings of the six plays selected for each year’s programme.

We meet twice a month, on Tuesdays, from September to April in the church hall of the Manvers Street Baptist church. Bath railway station and the bus station are only short walking distances away. There is also a municipal car park nearby.

Each play has a Convenor, who casts the principal parts. To give the opportunity for reasonable preparation, members cast in major roles are notified some time before the play is due to be read. Smaller parts are cast on the day of the reading. Two meetings are allocated to each play. The first session begins with an introduction by the Convenor, and at the end of the second session there is a short discussion. It is our policy that each member should have at least one major role during the year, should they so wish. Some members enjoy just listening to the readings.

Other social activities include theatre trips to Bristol, London and occasionally Stratford, an Open Day, and an annual lunch to commemorate the anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth.

The current annual subscription is £21.
